UNICEF says more than 32,000 children affected by Nepal floods

Six weeks after severe flooding and landslides in Nepal, UNICEF says tens of thousands of children still need support with safe water, education and protection.

More than 32,000 children have been affected by the floods and landslides in Nepal, UNICEF said in an update published on 9 October. The agency reported that 84 children had been declared dead and that thousands of people remained unaccounted for, while families continue to face disruption to basic services.

The disaster followed a glacial ice and rock collapse in late August that triggered destructive flooding. UNICEF says recovery will take time, with children needing continued access to safe water, education, health care and protection. The figures are attributed to UNICEF’s update and may change as authorities verify information.

People looking to help should follow guidance from Nepal’s authorities and established humanitarian organisations. Avoid sharing unverified casualty figures or donation appeals.
